Creating Your Primary Navigation Menu

Your primary menu items are the guideposts to your site. In the WashU Web Theme, only the top-level navigation shows. We do not use drop-down menus. This means that each category of items needs to be important and self-explanatory. Since there is limited real estate on the navigation bar, limit the number of items you have in this menu and use concise names.

Consider which pages of your site can be grouped together under one primary menu item. Learn more guidelines for great information architecture.

Creating a Primary Navigation Menu

  1. Go to Appearance > Menus.
  2. Select Create New Menu.
  3. Enter a name for your menu.
  4. Click Create Menu.
  5. On the left hand side of the page, you can add pages, links and categories of posts to the menu by checking the box next to each page and clicking Add to Menu.
  6. Drag and drop menu items to change the order and hierarchy as you wish.
  7. Under Menu Settings towards the bottom of the page, check the checkbox next to Prime Navigation Menu. Since you can have multiple menus, this designates this menu as the main navigation menu.
  8. Click Save Menu.
